Wasseralb

The Wasseralb is one of the four elements that can be experienced in the myth surrounding the municipality of Grins. Based on the sketches by Erich Horvath, Christian Moschen has realised the four elements from Corten steel sheet.

The story tells of four nature elves, the so-called Albigen, who represent the elements of fire, water, earth and air. A cunning giant once locked them in an iron chest and brought it to Grins. In return for shelter and food, he promised the people protection from fire, water, storms and earth-related dangers. For many years, the village then enjoyed a peaceful and happy time without major natural disasters.
One night, the chest was opened out of carelessness or recklessness. The four Albigen escaped in anger and began to quarrel with one another. As a result, fire, storms, heavy rain, floods and mudslides struck Grins. The village suffered from the unleashed forces of nature and could no longer find peace.
Eventually, the people of Grins managed to calm the Albigen with the help of the older villagers’ experience. A special bell lured the Fire Alb and the Water Alb into a deep crevice; from their combined power, a warm healing spring emerged, known as the Schellenloch. The Air Alb and the Earth Alb were reconciled through the power of a sacred oak tree and the oak forest that grew on the Oachenbühel. In this way, peace, fertility and happiness returned to Grins.
Today, the myth still recalls the four elements and the Albigen, who are commemorated by themed trails and sculptures around Grins.
