Nature reserve Flusser Sonnenhänge (Natura 2000 area)

Colorful variety on barren ground!

The extraordinary dryness of the slopes around Fließ is due to the inner-alpine climate and the foehn situation with less than 600 mm precipitation in the annual average and is considered a unique phenomenon north of the main Alpine ridge. It is reinforced by the southern exposure of the slopes with strong sunlight and the resulting high soil temperatures. Already in the Middle Ages Tyrol's largest dry grassland complex was created here when the dry pine forests at Fließ, Kauns, Kaunerberg and Faggen were cleared. Dry grasslands, rock bands, shrub and forest islands as well as overgrown reading stone walls form a valuable habitat for numerous heat-loving plants and animals . More than 1,100 butterfly species , many of them nocturnal, find here an ideal and unique habitat!
