Majestically enthroned the master castle of the country high above Meran on a mighty moraine hill. Castle Tyrol was the former seat of the Counts of Tyrol, which died out in 1253, and is now one of the country's landmarks. The castle was synonymous with the land of Tyrol created by Count Meinhard II in the 13th century.
It was not until the 19th century that the castle was renovated and in 2003 the South Tyrolean Museum of Cultural and Regional History was housed. The museum tells the story of the country of Tyrol from its beginnings to the present day. Today the impressive portals of the Palas and the castle chapel have survived as remains. The chapel also hides many early Gothic frescoes, the oldest stained glass windows and a larger than life crucifixion group. And above the entrance to the chapel you can see the oldest surviving depiction of the Tyrolean eagle.
